Has free-agency boosted Spielman’s contract hopes?
Rick Spielman has had good start to free agency that will not have gone unnoticed. He has maneuvered pieces very well and barring a couple of surprising decisions, the team has a scope to make another playoff run.
All the players that have departed either via release or free agency were largely expected. Mackensie Alexander will be a big loss as specialist nickel cornerbacks are hard to find. The way Minnesota handled the Everson Griffen situation also left a lot to be desired.
The release of Josh Klein was another bizarre move, especially when you consider how little the Vikings saved in cap space. Besides these three questionable calls, Spielman and the rest of the Minnesota staff can be largely encouraged with what they have managed to pull off so far.
This might be enough for the Vikings to give Spielman the commitment he is looking for. He has done a good job on the whole during his time in Minnesota.
There is much work still to be done and the Vikings are going to need to draft exceptionally well to find prospects that can make an instant contribution. There is also the possibility of Minnesota trading up if they identify a player that can make a massive difference.
Spielman has never been one to rest on his laurels. He is not afraid to go big with moves that he feels can benefit the franchise. With so much on the line this season, which could be the last of a rapidly closing window, making another splash is not out of the realm of possibility.
He has worked wonders so far with the limited resources available to him and it would be a shock if Spielman was not given an extended stay with the Minnesota Vikings.
