Should the Vikings have attempted to re-sign Rhodes?
With so much uncertainty at cornerback, the Vikings reportedly made an offer to bring back Xavier Rhodes for next season.
Minnesota lost all three of their top corners from last season and basically only have Holton Hill and Mike Hughes on the books prior to this year’s NFL Draft. This is an area of the field that represented significant concern last season and the same will be said in 2020 if the Vikings’ decision-makers do not make the necessary improvements.
If Rhodes were to have returned to Minnesota on a short-term deal, it would have provided the roster with some continuity from a player that was an established locker room presence who knows the system.
His level of performance during the last two seasons left a lot to be desired, which made it a strange decision by the Vikings to offer him a way back into the fold. Saying that, there isn’t much else available at the present time unless Hughes gets over his injury problems and Hill makes a giant leap forward.
For all his faults covering on the outside, Rhodes’ tackling is still one of the prominent features of his game that could have seen him make a transition to safety.
This is all a moot point now as he has decided to take on a new challenge with a different franchise, which is possibly the best solution for both parties.
