4 trade scenarios for the Vikings to land Trent Williams
By Dean Jones
Trade No. 4
-
2nd round pick (No. 58)
-
Fourth-round pick (No. 132)
-
2021 fourth-round pick
If the Vikings do not want to part with a first-round pick to acquire Trent Williams from the Redskins, then more draft capital will be needed to make a deal.
Minnesota offering a second and fourth-round selection from this year combined with the 2021 fourth-rounder they got from the Bills in the Stefon Diggs trade, might be a feasible option.
This would allow the Redskins to acquire multiple selections that would assist them with their current rebuilding phase. It would also allow the Vikings to focus their first-round picks on improving the defensive side of the ball.
Keeping Williams on their roster would do Washington more harm than good. Especially when one considers just how much noise he has made in the media regarding the Redskins’ lack of drive when it comes to finding him a new home. If this year’s NFL Draft passes by and he is still with Washington, the number of potential suitors would diminish significantly.
This might also play into Minnesota’s hands, but they will also not want to miss out on a potential draft prospect and put all their eggs in Williams’ basket. There is no doubt getting him to Minnesota warrants strong consideration, but the team’s decision-makers will be reluctant to give up too much and possibly hurt their chances of long-term success.
It is clear that this current Super Bowl window with the Vikings is closing and it may not last longer than the 2020 season. This sense of urgency, coupled with general manager Rick Spielman and head coach Mike Zimmer currently heading into the final year of their respective deals, could cause them to overpay slightly for one of the best tackles in the business.
