How come the Vikings haven’t extended Mike Zimmer yet?

Is Zimmer worthy of an extension?

There is plenty to like about the way the Vikings played last season. They overcame some early jitters to reach a 10-6 record that could have been even better had it not been for some narrow losses.

Mike Zimmer galvanized the troops when he needed them most. The indication coming out of Minnesota around the time Zimmer was being linked to the vacant coaching job with the Dallas Cowboys was that an extension would not be far in the future.

While that may have given the head coach an added sense of security, no deal has yet been confirmed which could have him looking over his shoulder heading into next season. Even though Zimmer has done a good job in Minnesota, certain sections of the team’s fan base still feel he has taken this team as far as he can and a fresh face should be brought in.

They do not make the decisions though and it would be very difficult for the Vikings to part ways with the head coach right now with so many more big moves waiting to be made. If Minnesota opts for a wait and see approach regarding Zimmer’s contract and one for general manager Rick Spielman as well, it will put added pressure on the 2020 campaign.

Zimmer is generally well-liked within the Vikings locker room and to make the playoffs three out of the last five seasons is no easy task. However, this is a franchise that is craving their first-ever Super Bowl victory and the jury is still out as to whether this head coach can get them there.
