Why is 2020 important for Smith?

The 2020 season is a pivotal one for Harrison Smith and the Vikings. With some many seasoned veterans moving on to new teams this year, it will be up to him and other experienced roster members to pick up the leadership load and ensure standards are met.

This is something Smith has already played a prominent role in leading the team during his time with the franchise. He is a very vocal presence on the field and he has an exceptional ability to motivate others around him to increase their production levels.

There is also the cornerback situation in Minnesota, which is still very concerning. It remains uncertain who will be brought in to improve this area of the field, but the onus will be on Smith and Anthony Harris to make sure any mistakes that hindered the franchise last season are not too damaging to their fortunes in 2020.

It is also an important season from a financial perspective. It would be great to see Smith play out his entire career with the Vikings. But the NFL is a business and any major drop-off in production may see his future with the organization end up in doubt.

All these factors result in a real crossroads season upcoming for Smith. But the same can also be said of the Vikings in general. Much has been made of the closing championship window and one gets the sense a rebuilding phase is only one poor regular-season record away.
