What to expect from Mattison in 2020

It would be a huge surprise if Alexander Mattison did not take a big leap forward in 2020. Rookies who normally have a good opening year in the NFL tend to go into their sophomore season with plenty of confidence.

This will be the case with Mattison, who grew in stature as the campaign progressed. Giving him more touches will take some of the pressure off Dalvin Cook as the Minnesota Vikings look to keep him fresh and productive throughout his impending new contract.

There is real potential Mattison can be an NFL starter in the future. He has all the tools that teams look for in a running back and developed his vision and timing superbly in 2019.

He could easily secure 1,000 yards from a starting spot in this Vikings offense. While the chances of that in Minnesota appear minimal, Cook has never played a full season since he was drafted and there will definitely be an opportunity for Mattison to make his presence felt.

There is a lot to like about the way Mattison has adapted to the rigors of the NFL. Minnesota showed tremendous faith in the player by taking him in the third round and this looks like it is going to bring its fair share of rewards in the years to come.

Having such a powerful backfield tandem is going to be crucial to any success the Minnesota Vikings are going to have going forward. With Stefon Diggs no longer with the franchise after he was traded to the Buffalo Bills, quarterback Kirk Cousins is going to need more security than ever.
