Beckham’s situation in Cleveland

Big things were expected of Odell Beckham Jr. and the Cleveland Browns heading into 2019. Sadly for their frustrated fanbase, it was a campaign littered with underachievement.

Head coach Freddie Kitchens was a casualty of their failings, losing his job after just one year at the helm. The team finished 6-10 after a disappointing season that was littered with controversy on and off the field from the likes of quarterback Baker Mayfield and defensive end Myles Garrett.

Beckham was noticeably silent by his outspoken standards. This could have been down to the player wanting to restore his reputation after making so much noise in New York.

Although he caught 74 passes for 1,035 yards and four touchdowns in 2019, Beckham once again dealt with niggling injury problems that hampered his ability to run routes and make dynamic plays consistently.

Former Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski is their new head coach, and he will not want to lose someone of Beckham ability. He still has game-changing potential and with a wealth of other offensive options at the Browns’ disposal, there will be high expectations once again in Cleveland.

There have been musings about Beckham wanting out due to the inconsistent play of Mayfield. The Browns gave the third-year quarterback a formidable presence on the offensive line in former Tennessee Titans standout Jack Conklin, so there will be no excuses this time around for the polarizing figure.

The Cleveland locker room looked like a powder keg waiting to go off at any moment in 2019. Stefanski will provide a calming influence going forward, but how that impacts Beckham and his future with the franchise remains to be seen.
