Is Dennard a viable option for the Vikings?

Given the Vikings’ need for veteran help at cornerback, Darqueze Dennard should be a very viable option for the franchise.

If he can stay healthy, then he would represent a bargain. Minnesota is still in a win-now mode for 2020, so relying on rookie cornerbacks might not be the best way to go. There are also plenty of questions surrounding the abilities of Holton Hill and Mike Hughes to make the starting positions their own.

The slot cornerback position is becoming more useful than ever in today’s pass-happy NFL. Providing Dennard is willing to take on that role, he would be a good replacement for Mackensie Alexander and he could even match his production with an extended period of games under his belt.

Minnesota’s decision-makers are not in the position to be offering any remaining free agents top dollar thanks to their current salary cap predicament. Dennard is a cheap option for a player at his position and he is a low-risk, high reward pick-up if he is potentially brought in on a short-term deal.

The Vikings might want to wait until after this year’s NFL Draft to see which veterans are still available. Dennard might not be around by then and if they are considering him, then an offer will likely need to be made beforehand.

Minnesota has reportedly spoken to many free-agent cornerbacks this offseason without securing any fresh faces. The Vikings could do a lot worse than taking a close look at Dennard and what he can offer the organization in 2020.
