While we’ve spent our time looking at players who are athletic freaks, we’ll now turn our attention to the other side of the spectrum. Curtis Weaver wasn’t the kid who thought he could play on the defensive line by eating a ton, but concerns about his athleticism are what’s weighing his stock down.

Weaver didn’t run the 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine, but that’s where the questions kind of end. That’s because Weaver killed the rest of the drills, recording a seven-second three-cone drill (90th percentile among edge rushers) and a 4.27-second shuttle drill (86th percentile). A 9-foot-8 broad jump also showed explosiveness, which is what you want from your edge rushers.

Then there’s his production at Boise State…and there was a lot of it. Weaver notched double-digit sacks in his freshman and junior year and missed the 10 sack mark by a half a sack in his sophomore campaign. As one of the most feared rushers in the Mountain West, he didn’t see top-notch competition, but he was able to get the job done.

Yes, his athleticism is off, but you’re normally not asking an edge defender to run 40 yards down the field anyway. If he can refine his technique, Weaver could be a solid addition for the Minnesota Vikings in the second round.
