Early in free agency this year, it appeared Anthony Harris‘ future with the Vikings was secure. They used the franchise tag on the breakout player from a season ago and the next step was going to be a long-term contract extension for him.

Instead of news on talks on that contract beginning, news broke that Minnesota was looking to trade Harris. The Vikings couldn’t find a partner and they eventually went back into negotiations with his agent.

Recent rumblings have stated that the Vikings and Harris have continued talking terms regarding a long term deal. But if nothing gets done before this year’s NFL Draft, he could be a player who gets dealt.

Harris is an excellent cover safety who has a knack for making plays on the ball. He led Minnesota with seven interceptions in 2019 and he seems to be coming into his own. It would be a shame to lose him when he’s reaching his prime, but the Vikings could get a decent haul for him.

If Minnesota wants to move up in a round they could offer Harris and some picks. They could also use the safety to acquire a player like Odell Beckham Jr. as part of a package if he’s truly on the block.

A team could also reach out to the Vikings and see what they are willing to accept for Harris and Minnesota could end up with even more draft choices this year than the 12 they currently have.

If a deal isn’t worked out between Harris and the Vikings before the draft, whether he plays for the team in 2020 or not could be decided by the end of the week.
