6 prospects the Vikings should target on Day 2 of the 2020 NFL Draft
By Nik Edlund
Xavier McKinney – S (Alabama)
Xavier McKinney is a guy who many figured would have been selected in the first round. Not only would he have come off the board in the opening round, but many saw him as a pick that would go pretty much in the middle of the first round.
The Dallas Cowboys were a popular landing spot for this guy heading into the draft, but they went for an offensive weapon instead and McKinney tumbled all the way to the second round.
It’s very surprising to see a player of this caliber still available when the second day of the draft kicks off. Standing at 6-feet and weighing a solid 201 pounds, he’s one of the most versatile defensive weapons in this year’s draft.
McKinney can drop back and be a centerfielder, he can play up on the line of scrimmage, and he can cover receivers like a cornerback. He can do it all, but perhaps this versatility and lack of a true position are what pushed him down the board.
While his role in the pros might be up in the air, it can’t be denied that McKinney is one of the best players left on the board.
The Vikings still have a big need at safety as they need depth and a future starter or two at the position. If they want McKinney, they’ll likely have to move up to get him. But after trading down from pick No. 25 on Day 1, they currently have the ammunition to do just that.
