As he continues to remain unsigned, Everson Griffen returning to play for the Minnesota Vikings in 2020 could be his best option to remain in the NFL.

When free agency began this year, many knew that the Minnesota Vikings were going to be saying goodbye to a number of longtime contributors. However, Everson Griffen was not believed to be among this group on their way out of Minnesota.

But shortly after the free agency period began, Griffen took to Instagram to say he was ending negotiations to return to the Vikings. Instead, the defensive end decided to move on from the team who drafted him and pursue a role with a new franchise.

Since then, things likely haven’t turned out the way Griffen might have thought they were going to. It’s almost May and he still hasn’t signed with a new team.

With this year’s NFL Draft now completed as well, the number of teams who might have been interested in signing the free-agent defensive end has become smaller. If Griffen wants to continue playing in the league next season, he’s probably going to have to take whatever offer comes his way at this point.

Bleacher Report’s Chris Roling recently listed the best fits for some of the remaining players left in free agency and for Griffen, he thinks remaining in purple and gold is a good possibility.

"“A reunion on team-friendly terms that lets the veteran prove himself before hitting the market again could make sense for all parties.”"

It’s anyone’s guess as to if and when he will sign with a team before the start of next season. Factor in the inability to currently meet face-to-face with members of other franchises due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it might be quite a while before Griffen signs his next deal.

For Minnesota though, they are already very familiar with the veteran defensive end. But recently, Vikings general manager Rick Spielman made it seem like the team has moved on from Griffen and they are now focusing on life without him.

Right now, it might actually be the best idea for Griffen to just sit back and wait until his services are needed. Opportunities will open up when teams are impacted by injuries and that is when he can help save the day as an experienced pass rusher.
