Vikings will re-sign Griffen

In one of the strangest dramas in the offseason, Everson Griffen has had the equivalent of a “You hang up! No, you hang up! I thought you hung up!” conversation in his contract negotiations.

What started with him voiding his contract to clear more than $13 million in cap space turned into a heartfelt goodbye on his Instagram account. Then, it was revealed that the post was made to let teams know he was available and other hints seem to show he hasn’t had much of a market.

There’s a good reason for this as teams probably would like to get him in their facilities to meet with him, but they can’t due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But the Vikings haven’t publicly acknowledged that Griffen won’t be back and the closer things get to training camp, the more likely conversations might open back up.

No NFL player owes a team anything, but Griffen has a soft spot for Minnesota. They took a chance on him when he slid to the fourth round of the 2010 NFL Draft, they held on through some early struggles, and they stood by him in 2018 when he missed time to work on his mental health.

The Vikings have gotten younger this offseason, but it’s still possible they can work something out to bring Griffen back.
