Vikings will add a free-agent guard before camp

While the opening round of free agency has come and gone, there’s still a chance to sign players on the open market.

The Vikings did a good job of plugging their holes with draft picks this year. But one position that they seemed to be content with was guard, where they waited until the final round to add a new one in Washburn’s Kyle Hinton.

Speaking to reporters after the draft, Rick Spielman stated that both starting guard spots will be open for competition. This is a great opportunity for Hinton and Dru Samia to try to crack the starting lineup. But it’s hard to believe their only competition is going to be Pat Elflein and Dakota Dozier.

That’s where Minnesota will probably open up the checkbook again and find a way to add another interior blocker.

Josh Kline was released at the start of free agency, but he could be brought back on a cheaper deal. Other veteran free-agents could be brought in or the Vikings could make a big splash by dealing for Joe Thuney, who is currently on the franchise tag with the New England Patriots.

A lot of this depends on how much money is leftover on the extensions for Dalvin Cook and Anthony Harris, Minnesota should find a way to make the “Can he play guard Battle Royal” even more interesting.
