2020 Minnesota Vikings: Players who could get cut before playing a snap
By Nik Edlund
WR Dillon Mitchell
The Vikings took Dillon Mitchell in the seventh round of the 2019 NFL Draft. Many figured the speedy Duck from Oregon had a chance to make the team with his size and quickness. Once the preseason got rolling, it was clear Mitchell had a lot of work to do.
He was basically at the bottom of the depth chart and soon saw fellow rookie Bisi Johnson pass him up. Mitchell was tried as a return man but couldn’t even impress enough there to find a spot on the roster. He did end up getting placed on the practice squad, but this guy was so far off from being on the team that the Vikings brought back Laquon Treadwell and signed Josh Doctson before thinking about trying to put him on the active roster.
Mitchell didn’t even get called to active duty a season ago. Instead, he saw other rookie wide receivers like Alexander Hollins and Davion Davis see action on the big stage.
Things aren’t going to be any easier for Mitchell in 2020. Not only does he have to battle against the players mentioned above he also has to fend off newcomers like Justin Jefferson, K.J. Osborn, and Quartney Davis. Unless he’s improved by light years this offseason, it’s almost a lock Dillon Mitchell will be cut before he ever sees a meaningful snap with the Vikings.
