Area No. 4 – Yards Per Target

Let this be an acknowledgment that yards per target is similar to the 15+ yard receptions metric mentioned earlier. The intention is not to be needlessly redundant.

Yards per Target is often overlooked in the NFL as one of the “big four” traditional stats: receptions, receiving yards, touchdowns, and yards per catch. This metric basically tells the beholder how many yards a player accrues each time a quarterback throws in his direction.

In both career time frames and the last four years when Thielen and Diggs became a formal duo–Diggs lags behind Thielen by about a half-yard per catch. This is obviously not an outrageous differential but over the course of a typical season can amount to 75+ yards.

Since 2016, Thielen averages 9.27 yards per target, good for seventh-best in the NFL among wide receivers. At 8.64 yards per target, Diggs ranks 16th.
