Ball security

Dalvin Cook has played 29 career games since his 2017 entry into the NFL. In those matchups, Cook has managed to fumble the football seven times.

In Adrian’s Peterson’s first 29 games in the league, he put the ball on the ground 12 times. That means Peterson fumbled the ball 70 more percent than Cook did in their first 29 times on the field.

In the last two decades with this 29-game parameter, Peterson’s 12 fumbles are the fourth-most by any running back. The only running backs to fumble the ball more through the first 29 contests of their career were Travis Henry (16), Ricky Williams (15), and Jamal Lewis (13).

Although not flawless in his own right, Cook has more so been a better protectorate of the football than Peterson, at least in the infancy of their careers.

Think of it this way. Peterson fumbles the football once every 13 quarters. So far, Cook has coughed it up once every 17 quarters. At its surface, this may not sound like that much of a contrast. Yet over the course of a season or a career, it is noteworthy.

Peterson has had some infamous and deadly fumbles at the most inopportune times. For the most part, Cook has avoided that bug so far.
