5 forgotten former members of the Minnesota Vikings – Part 2

DB Mike Doss
Mike Doss might not be a familiar name to the average NFL fan, but there was a time where he was a fairly well-hyped player. Way back in 2003, Doss was mentioned as one of the better safeties in the draft. He played college ball at Ohio State and was coming off a season where he was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the year. He was getting a lot of first-round buzz, but ultimately fell to the second round, where he was taken by the Indianapolis Colts.
Doss came storming out of the gate with a great rookie season for the Colts. He finished his first season with 105 combined tackles with five tackles for a loss, five pass breakups, one interception, and three forced fumbles. He looked like the playmaker he was in college, and many figured he’d be a key part in shoring up what had been a pretty porous Colts’ secondary.
The following season Doss’s numbers fell a bit, as he ended up just starting nine games. He bounced back in 2005 but suffered a season-ending knee injury in 2006. During that offseason, he was released by the Colts. The Vikings took a chance on the former second-round pick and signed him to a one-year prove-it deal.
Turns out Doss couldn’t prove much of anything. He played in eight games for the Vikings and started one of those. He had just six tackles for the Purple and was not brought back. While most will remember this guy as a Colt, he was, for but a moment, a Minnesota Viking.
