This might be the most confusing take yet on the Minnesota Vikings running back.

A bit of relief was felt throughout the Minnesota Vikings fan base on Tuesday when Dalvin Cook decided to show up to training camp on time.

Prior to Tuesday, there was some uncertainty surrounding if Cook was going to report on time or not due to his desire to land an extension from the Vikings. Minnesota has yet to extend their top running back, but he decided to show up to the team’s facilities this week anyway.

For the next few weeks, it will be interesting to see if Cook and the Vikings can actually work out a new deal. Minnesota has already made it clear that they want to keep the running back around past 2020. But what are they willing to pay for him to stay?

Peter King gives his thoughts on extending the Minnesota Vikings running back

For the last few decades, Peter King has evolved into one of the most respected NFL writers around the country. King’s opinion tends to mean more for some football fans compared to other writers who cover the sport.

Currently with NBC Sports, King was recently a guest on the CBS Sports Radio show “Tiki and Tierney” and he shared what he believes the Vikings running back should do heading into the upcoming season.

"“If I were Dalvin Cook, I wouldn’t want to get paid right now because of the financial uncertainty of the NFL. I think you’ll be lucky to basically get the money that Derrick Henry got in Tennessee. If you’re Dalvin Cook and you think, ‘Hey, I got a 40, 45 percent chance to win a rushing title this year,’ I would play it out and take my chances on a contract next year when at least next March you’re going to have a decent idea what the financials are around the NFL.”"

Wait, what? Cook should stop trying for an extension because Minnesota might not be able to afford him next year?

So, he should play out the final season of his current contract and hope that the Vikings or another team will want to pay him in 2021? Why would Cook ever consider something like this?

Obviously, Minnesota would love if he took this route, but the 24-year-old running back is familiar with how the NFL works and how he could be cut at the drop of a hat. There’s no reason for Cook to stop trying to get a new contract until it starts to significantly impact his future in the league.
