Fran Tarkenton – QB
The fact that quarterback Fran Tarkenton produced his career-high in passing yards during his final season with the Minnesota Vikings is proof positive of what a legendary player he was. And he continues to be recognized as the greatest ever to play for the organization.
Although there were plenty of people calling for him to play on following the 1978 season. Looking back in hindsight, it was the perfect time for the signal-caller to retire.
Tarkenton revolutionized the quarterback position during his career. He was one of the first to make plays out of the pocket. And this exciting style of play made him an instant fan favorite with the Vikings’ fanbase.
His accuracy throwing the ball downfield early and often was something that had not been seen in the NFL before Tarkenton’s arrival. This is a trend he kept up over an 18-year period that saw him play for the New York Giants before returning to Minnesota.
Tarkenton was an All-Pro, and NFL MVP, a nine-time Pro Bowler, and following his career, a Pro Football Hall of Famer. Playing on a couple more seasons after gaining 3.468 yards through the air during his final campaign wouldn’t have tarnished his legacy. But there is no denying he walked away with his head held high.
His time with the Vikings didn’t bring an elusive Super Bowl to the organization. But that does not detract from what an iconic and transcendent player he was.
