Hall of Famer doesn’t think Everson Griffen makes Cowboys better

Shannon Sharpe reacted to the former Minnesota Vikings pass rusher joining the Dallas Cowboys.

For the first time 2009, the Minnesota Vikings are holding their training camp without Everson Griffen as a member of their roster. Griffen recently signed with the Dallas Cowboys after being without a team for the majority of the 2020 offseason.

With the Cowboys, the former Vikings pass rusher has the opportunity to be a starter for a defense that was among the NFL’s best in 2019.

But even with all of his success in Minnesota, there are some who don’t believe the addition of Griffen means much for Dallas’ chances during the upcoming season.

What should the Dallas Cowboys expect from the former Minnesota Vikings defensive end?

Among the people who aren’t raving about Griffen joining Dallas is someone who is very familiar with the NFL. On a recent edition of FS1’s “Skip and Shannon: UNDISPUTED” Hall of Fame tight end Shannon Sharpe recently shared his thoughts on the former Vikings pass rusher heading to the NFC East.

"“I do think he adds quality depth. Now you have Dontari Poe, now you have (DeMarcus Lawrence), and you have (Gerald) McCoy. You add Everson Griffen, so you’ve got some nice pieces now. You really have a nice rotation that you can run in and out and keep people on their heels. What’s concerning to me is that (Griffen) was a free agent in March and here we are in August. So what transpired? What led to him not getting signed? Was his price just too high?(Signing Griffen) isn’t going to change their win total. Is that Aaron Donald? (Is that) Von Miller? FOX Bet says nine games. I’m with FOX Bet. Nine games, 9-7. You ain’t winning no 11, 12 games. That’s not going to happen”"

So Sharpe doesn’t think Griffen will add much to the Cowboys in 2020 because it took him longer to sign with a team this offseason? That seems like it’s the base of his argument.

If he dove a little deeper, he would’ve found information about why the former Minnesota defensive end went unsigned for as long as he did. Due to missing a handful of games in 2018 to focus on his mental health, interested teams wanted to meet with Griffen in person and that wasn’t able to happen until recently because of the restrictions put in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sharpe’s co-host, Skip Bayless (a well-known Dallas fan), went on to say that this signing was an, “all-time steal,” for the Cowboys and he described Griffen as a, “cornerstone right defensive end.”

The purpose of Bayless and Sharpe’s show is to basically argue back-and-forth on a certain topic and almost always, one of them conveniently disagrees with the other’s opinion. Is this just another case of that or does Sharpe truly believe that the arrival of Griffen won’t mean much for Dallas this season?
