No extension for Cook

It was something that was supposed to be completed by now. But here we are, less than three weeks before the start of the season, and Vikings running back Dalvin Cook is currently scheduled to become a free agent in 2021.

In the public eye, Minnesota has given the impression that they want to keep Cook around much longer than just one more season. However, the Vikings’ initial offer to the running back earlier this year was not something he was interested in agreeing to sign and it sounds like the team’s recent offers haven’t featured many changes.

There’s still a chance that a last-minute deal could get done between the two sides before the start of the season on September 13. But for now, it looks like Cook will play out the final year of his rookie contract this season and become a free agent in 2021

If a new contract is unable to get done before the 2021 offseason, then don’t be surprised if Minnesota goes ahead and uses the franchise tag for the second year in a row.

With the salary cap expected to decrease, the 2021 franchise tag for a running back is expected to be worth around $8 million, which seems like an amount that is closer to what the Vikings are willing to pay Cook.
