4 bombshell trades the Minnesota Vikings could make before Week 1
By Dean Jones
Melvin Ingram – OLB
If the Minnesota Vikings are all-in as they claim to be, then someone of Melvin Ingram’s caliber could be high on the shortlist. The outside linebacker is looking to get paid by the Los Angeles Chargers. But a new deal does not appear to be any closer despite the player holding out for a brief period before training camp.
Ingram has everything one looks for in a prominent edge rusher. He has exceptional footwork and the burst to match, and his partnership with Joey Bosa has paid significant dividends for the Chargers in recent years.
The former first-round pick might not be getting any younger, but Ingram is still playing at a very high level. He is credited with seven sacks, 39 solo tackles, 11 tackles for loss, and 12 quarterback hits from his efforts in 2019 and there are few who would argue he is not a substantial upgrade on Eric Wilson opposite Anthony Barr.
This would be a bold move by the Vikings. Ingram might consider joining a contender with plenty of uncertainty surrounding the Chargers’ chances next season. But his contractual unhappiness isn’t going away and would need to be addressed at some stage by the organization.
Ingram is also the wrong side of 30 now. But there is little to suggest he is set for a downward slump next season. If the Vikings want to make a statement before Week 1 of the 2020 season, then this sort of move would certainly do just that.
