Rookie Dan Chisena surprisingly made the Minnesota Vikings final 2020 roster.

Every season, there are players who surprisingly make it onto the final roster of the Minnesota Vikings. Some of the team’s choices are more surprising than others and this year was no different.

A few days ago, the Vikings revealed the 53 guys who will enter the 2020 season on their roster. In terms of shocking decisions, there weren’t very many made by Minnesota with this year’s squad.

However, the Vikings’ choice to keep a rookie wide receiver who had a grand total of three catches during his college career was easily the biggest head-scratching move they made.

Why did the Minnesota Vikings keep Dan Chisena?

The guys over at Bleeding Purple recently went over the 53 players Minnesota kept on their roster and rookie pass-catcher Dan Chisena was among the biggest surprises.

Chisena was not selected in this year’s NFL Draft and no one was shocked by this. During his college career at Penn State, the Vikings rookie caught a total of three passes.

So what exactly caused Minnesota to keep him on their final roster this season over someone like Alexander Hollins? Well, apparently the Vikings believe Chisena and his 4.3 speed has the potential to develop into a, “premier special teams player.”

Even if Minnesota does think he can develop into a great special teams contributor, why not stash him on the practice squad? Did they only put him on the final roster so that no other team around the NFL would be able to claim him on waivers?

It’s just a bit puzzling as to why the Vikings appear to be so infatuated with this kid. Although, this is the same regime that kept Moritz Bohringer around longer than they should have, so maybe this decision by Minnesota actually shouldn’t be as surprising as it is.
