Mike Hughes – CB
Mike Hughes has a significant opportunity in front of him next season. He will get the chance to be one of the Vikings’ top two options at cornerback for the foreseeable future and the onus will be on the former first-round pick to finally deliver on his enormous promise.
Hughes has had his fair share of injury problems throughout his career. There is no doubting his credentials when he is actually on the field. But keeping him away from enforced absences on the sidelines remains something of a conundrum for the coaching staff.
Losing Xavier Rhodes, Trae Waynes, and Mackensie Alexander this year means Minnesota will be relying on relatively unproven corners this season. Hughes and Holton Hill should fill in starting roles initially. But the presence of rookie duo Jeff Gladney and Cameron Dantzler is something to keep a close eye on as the campaign progresses.
This only heightens the urgency for Hughes to perform. He gave up 41 receptions from 65 targets in 2019 according to Pro Football Focus and more will be needed in the coming months to propel himself into becoming a cemented starter with the organization.
Hughes is heading into the penultimate year of his rookie deal. If he hits the ground running and continues this trend, then it could come with some financial rewards down the line.
