Smith will have his breakout game

One of the biggest disappointments last week was the absence of tight end Irv Smith Jr. After putting together a steady drumbeat during training camp, the Alabama product was targeted just once by Kirk Cousins. Although he was absent from the field, it’s likely he wasn’t absent from the game plan and he should see more usage this week.

Unlike the Packers, the Colts run a less aggressive scheme that looks to take away the big play and get more aggressive in the red zone. That should mean that Indianapolis defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus will be more focused on stopping Vikings receiver Adam Thielen on the outside and be more willing to concede yards in the middle of the field.

With Minnesota rookie receiver Justin Jefferson still getting acclimated to the NFL, Smith could be the player that could benefit from this game plan.

The Vikings would surely like to get their dynamic tight end involved and even if he cedes work to Kyle Rudolph inside the 20, Smith could still be a key player for Minnesota’s offense on Sunday.
