3. Mike Zimmer could topple the Colts for the first time as a head coach

It’s tempting to file this factoid in the “who cares” cabinet but hear us out.

There are only five NFL teams that Mike Zimmer has not defeated as head coach of the Vikings: Buffalo Bills, New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers, Seattle Seahawks, and of course, the Colts. Zimmer will have the chance to cross two of these teams off the list in 2020. He will get a crack at the Colts this Sunday and then the Seahawks — for the fifth time — in mid-October.

The preceding occasion that Minnesota and Indianapolis matched up was, to date, one of the low points of Zimmer’s head coaching career. The year was 2016, and the Vikings owned a 7-6 record. The Colts came to U.S. Bank Stadium in its inaugural year where they proceeded to thrash the Vikings and effectively squashed Minnesota’s playoff hopes. Moreover, Indianapolis entered the game with a 6-7 record, so the team was not all that formidable on paper.

As an act of vengeance and an opportunity to put another checkmark on his resumé, Zimmer will try to solve the Colts in Week 2.
