Dru Samia – OG

Dru Samia was handed a golden opportunity on Sunday to earn himself a starting job on the Vikings offensive line. He was filling in for Pat Elflein who is on injured reserve with a thumb injury and with a solid showing against the Colts, many assumed Samia would take over for the struggling Elflein.

Samia’s performance in Week 2 was impressive, but not in a good way. He somehow made Elflein look like an All-Pro.

Samia struggled to open holes in the running game and he was overpowered in pass protection. At one point he was basically thrown by DeForest Buckner and flew about two yards in the air and rolled for four more. It’s no wonder Cousins looked gun shy the entire game with such shoddy protection.

While Samia doesn’t get a pass, it does have to be noted that this was his first career start and he was going up against one of the best in Buckner. He definitely should be given some time to improve and he will learn from this experience.

While Samia will likely get at least one more shot to show what he can do, it is a tough pill to swallow for Vikings fans to realize that their best option at right guard might just be with the guy who is out with a bum thumb.
