The once-vaunted defense of the 49ers has been decimated by injuries this season. This has resulted in the defending NFC champions suffering a downturn in form after reaching the Super Bowl during the last time out. But they are not completely out of the running following a dominant win over the New England Patriots in Week 7.
Beating a New England team that is a shell of its former self is one thing, but making their presence felt in a competitive NFC West is another matter entirely. San Francisco is currently propping up the division despite boasting a 4-3 record, which is a further testament to its overall strength.
If the 49ers want to make another postseason push, then general manager John Lynch might need to get creative. Their depth is already at a threadbare level and trading for Harrison Smith could reinvigorate their chances in a division that could have three teams in the playoffs this year.
Taking a gamble such as this comes with its own complications if things don’t pan out as expected. Just what sort of asking price the Vikings would demand in a possible trade for Smith is still up in the air and this will play a big factor in whether a team like San Francisco will take the plunge.
