Defensive Unsung Hero from Week 8:

D.J. Wonnum – DE

Rookie defensive end D.J. Wonnum was the only Vikings defender to record a quarterback hit on Aaron Rodgers this time around. He tallied two such hits and a strip-sack at the end of the game to seal the win. In their first matchup since trading Yannick Ngakoue, Minnesota found success with their rookie replacements.

Wonnum has shown some flashes in the first half of the season and the Vikings appear high on him moving forward. Minnesota’s defense has been worrisome all season long thanks to injuries and poor play, but seeing some rookies take strides is all we can really ask for at this point.

The Vikings would be wise to give each of their young pass rushers a shot this season to see who will fit next to Danielle Hunter in 2021 and who can be part of the rotation. Wonnum was a Day 3 draft pick who has played above expectations thus far.

This is a great opportunity for Wonnum to build upon and it also gives Minnesota some hope for their lackluster pass rush this season. Getting a game-clinching sack against Rodgers has to feel good for Wonnum, as well.
