Alexander Mattison – RB

Again, when a team goes on the road, plays out of their head, and wins a game no one expects them to against a superior opponent, it’s hard to pick out players who disappointed.

Alexander Mattison falls into a bit of that nit-picking category, as he simply didn’t get enough touches to make any sort of impact on the game.

Dalvin Cook was extremely hot the entire contest and Mattison only relieved the workhorse of three carries. It was what Mattison did with those three carries that was disappointing.

When a back only gets a few scant chances to run the football, they have to make the most of them. Mattison only racked up eight yards on his three carries for a paltry 2.7 average per attempt.

Minnesota’s offense took a clear step backward without Cook in the lineup and the entire vibe of the unit changed to a much more positive feel whenever Cook came back into the huddle. Mattison did run hard, but one time he tripped as he was hitting the hole, and that’s something we don’t see Cook do.

The Vikings need Mattison to be able to come in and relieve Cook for more than just three carries. As the season wears on, so will Minnesota’s top running back and it will be this Mattison’s job to ensure that he stays fresh.

In order to do this, the Vikings No. 2 running back will need to make the most out of the carries he gets and he can’t get tripped up at the line of scrimmage or run into a hole that isn’t there.
