5 Minnesota Vikings on the hot seat at the 2020 midseason point
By Dean Jones
Bisi Johnson – WR
One of the real surprises of the 2020 season so far has been the lack of both opportunities and production from Bisi Johnson. The wide receiver did tremendously well when called upon as a rookie in 2019 and it was thought that more in the way of targets might be coming his way this time around after the Vikings opted to trade Stefon Diggs.
The Vikings’ decision to select Justin Jefferson in the first round tempered expectations regarding Johnson’s ability to move into the No. 2 wideout spot. But it’s hard not to look at his lack of involvement with anything other than disappointment.
Johnson has just five receptions from nine targets this season. He hasn’t seen a ball thrown his way in three games and was only on the field for 14 percent of Minnesota’s offensive snaps against the Lions.
Not exactly what the former seventh-round pick had in mind.
Compare this to the 45 targets Johnson gained in 2019 – most of which came in the latter half of the season during his six starts – and it puts into serious question just what sort of future lies ahead for the player.
Expecting Johnson to fill the void left by Diggs was unrealistic. But even his place on the rotation now looks in real doubt after becoming almost invisible during his sophomore campaign.
