At 39-years-old, Philip Rivers was able to help lead the Colts to the playoffs this season. With the guidance of Indianapolis head coach Frank Reich, Rivers finished his 2020 campaign with 4,169 passing yards, 24 touchdowns, 11 interceptions, and his second-highest passer rating (97.0) since 2014.

When the Colts’ playoff journey ends this year, they will have to make a big decision about their current starting quarterback. Rivers is currently scheduled to become a free agent when the new league year begins in March and it’s certainly possible that Indianapolis would like to explore other options under center instead of bringing back a guy who will turn 40-years-old during the 2021 season.

With the Colts estimated to have more than $65 million in cap space during the upcoming offseason, one should expect them to make an attempt to make a deal for at least one of the quarterbacks that could potentially be on the trade block, including Kirk Cousins.

Since Indianapolis is a playoff team this season, their selection in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft will likely come too late to land one of the top young quarterbacks from the incoming class of prospects. So a better route for the Colts to take might be to trade for an established veteran passer like Cousins, Matthew Stafford, or Matt Ryan.

During his coaching career in the NFL, Reich has developed a reputation for getting the most out of the quarterbacks in his offensive system. Having the chance to work with someone like Cousins who is coming off a season in which he threw for 35 touchdowns seems like it would be an opportunity that would certainly intrigue the Indianapolis head coach.

Thanks to their salary cap space, the Colts are going to have a lot of options when it comes to choosing who their starting quarterback will be in 2021. Working out a trade with the Vikings to acquire Cousins is something that definitely should not be ruled out for Indianapolis during the next few months.
