4 realistic candidates to be the next Vikings offensive coordinator
By Adam Carlson
Jay Gruden
In 2014, a lot of fans wanted to see Jay Gruden join the Minnesota Vikings as their new head coach. Of course, that job went to Mike Zimmer, who has brought the purple and gold to a 66-50-1 record in the regular season and playoffs since being hired.
Now, it looks as though there is a chance the Vikings could have both of these coaches on their staff. The Jaguars are moving on from Gruden as their offensive coordinator to hire former Vikings OC Darrell Bevell, leaving the former Washington head coach without an official position heading into the 2021 season.
Interestingly enough, Gruden’s route in the NFL is a peculiar one. Never once has he been a positional coach at any level, always being a coordinator, head coach, or assistant. However, Gruden did play quarterback in college as well as the Arena Football League, where he won numerous awards.
Being the son of Jim Gruden and brother of Jon Gruden may have opened some doors for Jay, but bringing him in to be the offensive coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings wouldn’t really be a sexy hire. Still, the purple and gold could do much worse.
