Fifth Round (Pick No. 141)

Damar Hamlin – S (Pittsburgh)

Just like defensive end, the Vikings can’t be content with drafting just one safety this year and will probably take another safety in the middle rounds of this year’s NFL draft this April. If they wait until Round 5, a guy they should target is Damar Hamlin out of Pittsburgh.

Hamlin boasts good size at 6-foot-1 and 195 pounds. He’s an aggressive tackler who attacks the line of scrimmage and it shows in his 275 career tackles.

Hamlin is pretty solid in coverage and he has shown some decent ball skills, as he picked off six passes in his collegiate career. This guy has great instincts and he is quick to diagnose a play and then descend upon the ball carrier.

Hamlin would be a guy who the Vikings could bring in and he would immediately compete to win the expected vacant spot next to Harrison Smith. If he doesn’t win the job, he would surely see action in certain packages and would likely be a special team standout in year one.

He had a good showing at the Senior Bowl and he could be off the board long before this choice is made. But If he does slip to the Vikings here, he’d add a ton of energy and life to the team’s secondary and could be a productive player right out of the gate.
