5 free-agent cornerbacks the Vikings could sign in 2021
By Chris Schad
Which free-agent cornerbacks will the Minnesota Vikings be interested in this offseason?
If there’s one thing we know about Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer, it’s that he loves his cornerbacks.
Last year, Zimmer’s favorite position group endured an overhaul as veterans Xavier Rhodes, Trae Waynes, and Mackensie Alexander all found new homes. With Holton Hill and Mike Hughes leading the way, this was a chance for Zimmer to keep the Vikings defense afloat.
Instead, Minnesota’s defense became a trial by fire last season.
With Hughes going back on injured reserve and Hill getting waved before the midway point of the season, the Vikings were thrust into a youth movement.
Rookie corners Cameron Dantzler and Jeff Gladney had their share of ups and downs as starters, but the group suffered most from a lack of depth. As Chris Jones and Kris Boyd struggled, Minnesota’s secondary fell apart and became part of one of the worst defenses in franchise history.
2021 should have some optimism considering the Vikings’ young corners now have a year of experience under their belt. But Minnesota still needs to find players that can contribute immediately.
With most corners needing time to develop, the Vikings will hit free agency this year to find players that can help provide depth and potentially fill a starting spot.
