Tyler Kroft
The Vikings might have to look at the second-tier of tight ends if they are on the lookout for a Kyle Rudolph replacement this offseason. Several other positions need strengthening and come with a higher priority, so getting some value with some less-heralded free agents might be the smart way for Minnesota to go.
Someone like Tyler Kroft fits into this category. The reliable pass-catcher has been a consistent performer in a rotational role during his time in the league. He showed enough with the Buffalo Bills last time out to perhaps get a chance to make a bigger impression in a different environment.
Kroft might not look it, but he has a sneaky athleticism that takes opposing defenders off guard. He has no trouble rising to the occasion when targeted in critical moments and although there is some concern regarding his injury history, he might be a cost-effective option for additional help at the position if Rudolph is shown the door.
Irv Smith Jr. would probably still take command of the top spot, but having two tight-end sets is something that’s all the rage in today’s NFL and would give Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins some additional options in the passing game providing another wide receiver is also found either in free agency or the 2021 NFL Draft.
