4 mistakes the Vikings must not make in 2021 free agency
By Dean Jones
What mistakes must the Minnesota Vikings avoid ahead of another critical free agency period for the organization in 2021?
It is going to be a hugely eventful few weeks upcoming for the Minnesota Vikings and the rest of the NFL. Free agency is always one of the offseason’s highlights and it promises to be more dramatic than ever this time around with teams cutting costs to comply with a reduced salary-cap thanks to revenue losses related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Vikings are not exempt from this. They’ve made a number of notable roster cuts and they currently have almost $9 million in cap space.
Providing Minnesota makes the necessary cuts elsewhere to create even more spending money, there could be some real value to be had on the free-agent market this year. More veteran players could be looking for work than ever, so taking short-term deals for less could be a more enticing proposition than it has been in the past.
The Vikings do have a bounty of 2021 NFL Draft picks to utilize, which will be another big boost to the depth chart in key areas. However, considering what is at stake for head coach Mike Zimmer and general manager Rick Spielman next season, they might be looking for free-agent signings who can make an immediate impact.
There is no margin for error for Minnesota this year. What are four mistakes they cannot make once the free-agent frenzy gets underway?
