Not acquiring a veteran CB

Cameron Dantzler and Jeff Gladney showed enough encouraging signs in 2020 to state they could be a prolific starting cornerback duo for the Vikings moving forward.

First-year players at the position do tend to go through their fair share of growing pains, which both suffered at times last season. But providing they make the necessary strides this offseason then the sky is the limit.

There are a number of questions remaining behind them on the depth chart though. It’s probably time for Minnesota to give up on former first-round pick Mike Hughes after another campaign was frustrated by injury.

Holton Hill is obviously gone, so the Vikings need to find the right veteran fit in free agency to avoid experiencing the same sort of complications in 2021. Bringing in another talented young prospect from the NFL Draft is a realistic possibility. But Minnesota needs immediate help from someone who knows what it takes at the next level.

As will be the case with every decision the Vikings make this offseason, much is going to depend on the finances involved. However, if there was ever a year to take advantage of free agents who might not be demanding the earth in the current climate, this is it.

If the Vikings don’t address their cornerback depth this spring by signing a free-agent with proven NFL production, it might come back to haunt them.
