A recent report about the health of current Minnesota Vikings cornerback Mike Hughes indicates that he should be able to continue ahead with his football career.

After his first few games with the Minnesota Vikings, it seemed like Mike Hughes was on his way to living up to the expectations that were given to him when he was selected in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

But then his career was quickly altered when he suffered a torn ACL in the sixth game of his rookie season. Hughes missed the remainder of the Vikings‘ 2018 campaign and since his injury, his performance hasn’t resembled anything close to someone who was a first-round draft pick.

He’s dealt with a few other injuries since his ACL tear in 2018 and last season with Minnesota, he only appeared in four games because of a neck injury. With it being his second neck injury in less than a year, some wondered if his time in the NFL might be coming to an end.

Recent report reveals health status of Minnesota Vikings corner Mike Hughes

For those who have been curious about the current health of Hughes, it sounds like he should be able to continue his football career.

According to the Pioneer Press’ Chris Tomasson on Monday, the Vikings corner is “fully healthy,” and he has “recovered,” from the neck injury he suffered during the 2020 season.

This is great news for Hughes since he’s still only 24-years-old. But now the question becomes whether or not his career in the NFL will continue in a Minnesota uniform.

With the Vikings recently adding Patrick Peterson and Mackensie Alexander to a cornerback group that already featured Cameron Dantzler and Jeff Gladney, it’s possible that the team could look to move on from Hughes before the start of next season.

Minnesota would clear around $1.2 million in cap space if they release Hughes this year. With other corners on their roster that are cheaper and don’t have a ton of injury questions surrounding them, the Vikings might feel that Hughes isn’t worth keeping around.

It will be interesting to see what Minnesota does with the young corner during the next few months, especially since he could still have something to offer to the team as a returner.
