Stopping Harrison Smith from walking out the door next year could happen if the Vikings decide to give the All-Pro safety an extension before the 2021 season. But until then, the possibility of Smith not being in Minnesota after this year is very real.

Ever since the franchise selected him in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft, Smith has spent his entire career in purple with the Vikings. Minnesota’s Ring of Honor is in his future and so is a possible spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

But at 32-years-old, the end of Smith’s time in the league is getting closer. He still performed well last season, and there’s a good chance he’ll perform at a high level again in 2021. But the Vikings might be looking to say their goodbyes before his inevitable decline begins to take place.

The chance of Smith and Minnesota agreeing to a contract extension within the next few months seems high. But if they don’t, we could potentially see “The Hitman” take the field in a different uniform for the 2022 season.
