Minnesota Vikings safety Harrison Smith recently discussed the possibility of signing an extension in the near future to remain in purple and gold.
During his tenure with the Minnesota Vikings, Harrison Smith has already accomplished enough to be regarded as one of the greatest players to ever suit up for the franchise.
But this doesn’t mean Smith is looking to end his time with the Vikings anytime soon.
Even at 32-years-old, the veteran safety has plenty of good football left in him and it sounds like he wants to continue his career in the NFL with Minnesota.
Harrison Smith says he wants to continue playing for the Minnesota Vikings
Currently, Smith only has one year left on his contract with the Vikings. He’s never been a free agent since he entered the league in 2012, but he’s currently scheduled to hit the market after the upcoming season.
However, most are expecting Minnesota to try and extend Smith’s current deal before the start of the 2021 campaign. The All-Pro safety is still performing at a high level and he remains a vital piece of the team’s defense.
As for when an extension might come together? That remains to be seen, but Smith recently shared that he’s not really looking to play for another team anytime soon.
"“I’ve been here going on 10 [seasons] and would love to be here in the future. Going to look at those things and see what we can do. That’s about it right now.”"
No one should really be surprised with Smith’s comments. He’s never been one to draw attention to his team or himself with his words as he’s gained the majority of his notoriety from his performance out on the field.
Smith is the type of player that every team would love to have. He gets the job done, he leads by example, and he’s not someone who is going to create any problems inside the locker room.
With that being said, it feels like there could still be a small chance that the Vikings might let Smith play out the final year of his contract before giving him a new deal.
Based on Minnesota’s history with guys who have remained with the organization for a long period of time, not giving the safety an extension before the start of next season doesn’t seem likely. But it’s still something that can’t be ruled out until the moment Smith actually signs a new contract with the Vikings.
