The talk of minicamp this offseason has been Xavier Woods and his ability to communicate in the secondary. The Vikings opted to let Anthony Harris walk in free agency and signed Woods to be his replacement, which has worked out so far. Woods is an outstanding athlete on the back end of the defense and will hold down the starting job this season.

Minnesota has a good starting safety pairing, but the depth behind them is worrisome. The current backup safeties are Myles Dorn, Camryn Bynum, and Josh Metellus. None of those guys have any significant experience and turning to them for important reps could be costly.

Veteran safety Tre Boston has been around for a while and has produced wherever he’s been. With 104 games under his belt, Boston has tallied 15 interceptions and 429 tackles. He may not be an elite athlete or overly impactful defender, but Boston has made a living as a starting-caliber safety who makes splash plays.

Adding him to the back of the defense in case an injury comes along should be in Minnesota’s mind right now. Safety injuries have popped up quite a bit over the years and they have implemented three safeties in the defense. If they want to replicate a similar defense to the days of Smith, Harris, and Andrew Sendejo, adding Boston or another veteran free agent makes sense.
