Unlike Greg Joseph, there is no NFL experience to look at with Riley Patterson. As an undrafted free agent out of Memphis, this will be the first chance Patterson will have to impress an NFL team enough to get a consistent gig as a pro.

Patterson will have to price that he can be consistent if he wants to be the Vikings kicker in 2021. He had an excellent 2019 campaign in college that saw him miss only one of his 25 field goal attempts and make all but one of his extra point tries. This performance opened some eyes to his potential.

However, his final year of college was not as good. He missed seven of his 22 field goal attempts. This performance likely caused experts and teams to sour a bit on his potential entering the 2021 NFL Draft and the Vikings were able to bring him in without using a draft pick.

For now, Greg Joseph is likely the favorite to be Minnesota’s kicker based on his experience but a few slip-ups in training camp and the preseason coupled with solid play from Patterson and it could be the rookie handling the duties this year.
