Davis won’t be a starting guard out of camp

When the Vikings selected Wyatt Davis in the third round of the NFL Draft, many put his name in the starting lineup. One of the top guard prospects in the draft, Davis was considered a first-round prospect last fall before injuries took their toll.

After limping off the field in the national championship game, Davis’s stock took a tumble, and the Vikings were more than happy to scoop him up with the 86th overall pick.

But like Mond, Davis’s draft status isn’t going to hand him a starting job. Zimmer has several players that he trusts (for better or worse) on the offensive line and could opt to go with Mason Cole, Oli Udoh, or even Dakota Dozier to start the season.

The keywords to note here are “to start the season.” Davis should capture the starting job at some point in the season, but it may not be Week 1. With a gauntlet of pass rushers on the schedule, the Vikings need to make sure Davis is ready to go, and that could lead to a different guard starting the first month of the season.
