Born to be Wildcat

On Saturday, there were reports of the Minnesota Vikings breaking out the wildcat offense with Dalvin Cook and Alexander Mattison on the field at the same time. Interestingly, that combination returned on Monday and that doesn’t seem like as much of a decoy anymore.

While it would be interesting to see the team line up in this formation this season, Courtney Cronin hinted on Twitter that it might be something that happens this season since Mike Zimmer asked the players to line up that way to get a look at how it works.

Having that much speed and power on the field and being able to use misdirection to keep opposing defenses on their toes is an intriguing concept. Minnesota is typically a straightforward football squad but changing things up (or at least exploring the option to) shows this team isn’t absolutely stuck in their old-school offensive mentality.

With a new offensive coordinator and this revelation from Zimmer, it might actually be possible to see the wildcat in some situations. Whether or not there was a lot of success from that formation in camp hasn’t been a hot topic as of yet, but it should be something to keep an eye on.
