More Smiths?

Harrison Smith and Irv Smith Jr. are set to be starters this season for the Minnesota Vikings but there might be one other individual with that last night who could win a starting gig on defense if he can continue playing well.

From the sound of what Courtney Cronin shared on Twitter, Cameron Smith is emerging as a candidate to be the team’s third starting linebacker next to Anthony Barr and Eric Kendricks in base formations.

He has moved into the starting formations at training camp with Nick Vigil, Blake Lynch, and Troy Dye behind him as rookie Chazz Surratt attempts to take in all the new information and adjust to the NFL level.

Previously, D.J. Wonnum has been seen in that linebacker role but it is starting to look as though that will just be a situational role for him. When the team is in an obvious pass defense situation, Minnesota can have the option to work with an extra defensive back or pass rusher to give opposing offenses different looks.
