Previously, one takeaway included in the daily training camp pieces included news that the Minnesota Vikings were trying out D.J. Wonnum at defensive end as well as the third linebacker spot this year.

At first, the impression was that Wonnum would be put in that role situationally when the opposing offense was in obvious passing situations. That might not be the case if observations from Eric Smith on Twitter are accurate.

Smith called Wonnum’s interception of Jake Browning “the play of the day,” adding that Minnesota seems comfortable with the highly athletic defender dropping back into coverage as well as getting after the quarterback.

Having this type of versatility could do wonders for Wonnum, who should be considered a lock for a roster spot and an option to win a starting job at either defensive end or linebacker. If nothing, getting him more reps should help to keep evaluating him and letting him develop moving forward.
