After winning the gold medal at this year’s Olympics in Tokyo, the Minnesota Vikings and Gable Steveson will be joining forces on Saturday.

The Minnesota Vikings made an announcement on Friday that they will be bringing in Gold-medal Olympic Wrestler Gable Steveson prior to Saturday’s preseason game against the Denver Broncos.

Stevenson won the gold medal for Team USA wrestling in dramatic fashion at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, scoring the winning point in the final seconds of the match.

A physical specimen at just 21 years old, Steveson has plenty of options ahead of him in terms of a possible NFL career. Steveson said he heard from the WWE as well as the Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens before the Vikings Announced in a tweet that they would “see him tomorrow.”

A former University of Minnesota Golden Gopher wrestler, Steveson returns to his roots in the land of 10,000 lakes to sound the Gjallarhorn before the Vikings Week 1 preseason contest.

So what could this mean for the Minnesota Vikings?

If the team were to hold a workout for Steveson and sign Steveson, they would have a gold medal Olympian on their roster and someone who is going to compete down to the final seconds. Head coach Mike Zimmer stated that he wanted his team to be more in shape, stating, “I’m not worried about our team in the first quarter, I’m worried about the fourth quarter.”

At 6’1, 260 lbs, Steveson has a lot of versatility in terms of where he fits in on the football field. While he may be a little small for the offensive line (at the moment) he can find a role on any special teams as well as provide depth at the linebacker position after the departure of former Viking Eric Wilson this offseason.

It will be interesting to see how things shake out for Steveson. Also, seeing what the Vikings could come up with regarding Steveson and what the Olympian’s next steps will be would be fun to watch.

Who knows, maybe we could see Steveson pair his gold medal with the purple and gold this fall.
