Minnesota Vikings kicker impersonating the human torch recently
By Adam Patrick
Minnesota Vikings kicker Greg Joseph has been lighting it up recently in practice, which is a great sign for the team heading into the 2021 season.
For some reason, it has felt like the Minnesota Vikings kicking situation has been a bit under the radar this offseason. Maybe Vikings fans have just been anticipating the team’s kicker to rip their hearts out at some point this year, no matter who ends up with the job.
Currently, Greg Joseph is the only kicker on Minnesota’s roster. Joseph is expected to open the 2021 season as the Vikings’ kicker as long as things don’t take a turn in the wrong direction during the next few weeks leading up to the team’s Week 1 matchup with the Cincinnati Bengals.
But based on how he’s been kicking in practice recently, he shouldn’t have to worry about Minnesota looking at other kickers before the start of the regular season.
Greg Joseph has converted 17-straight field goals in practice for the Minnesota Vikings
A few weeks ago, the Vikings were still unsure if Joseph or undrafted rookie Riley Patterson was going to end up as their kicker this year.
However, an injury prevented Patterson from being much of a participant in Minnesota’s kicking battle this summer, and the team ultimately decided to recently give the job to Joseph after placing the rookie on injured reserve.
Judging from the veteran’s recent performances in practice, the Vikings should actually be excited about the potential of their kicking game this season.
According to Vikings.com’s Eric Smith on Wednesday, Joseph has made each and every one of the last 17 field goals he’s attempted in Minnesota’s practices. Smith added that, overall, the Vikings kicker is 35-of-41 on field-goal attempts since the team began training camp at the end of July.
17 made field goals in a row seems like a dream for a kicker who is employed by the Vikings. Maybe Minnesota has actually stumbled upon a kicker that won’t cause the blood pressure of the team’s fan base to skyrocket every time he lines up to attempt a kick?
Well, let’s not get carried away just yet.
